We had a baby with developmental dysplasia of hip or DDH, came in for CT scan last week. Baby was on hip spica... so legs are flexed abducted (can google hip spica, DDH). Remember at one time, we were talking about baby terkangkang? Coincidentally found nice, simple explanation on Sleepywrap.

Hmm --  pity all the babies who had been forced to straighten their legs :-(
So hanim, how's the baby doing now -- what's the treatment like??

hanim, thanks for sharing this.
during confinement, i had ppl coming by and REALLY straightening my daughter's legs when swaddling (like mummy!). happened a couple of times. this is my experience, but it's usually among the malay community. I don't remember any of my relatives doing that to my daughter though, maybe it's just my family!
also had remarks about baby's legs being froggy style, etc etc.. la la la.. when BW.

there's also a mention of this in The Baby Book by Dr Sears.

OT a bit, is it true that babies who walk when they aren't ready to (i dunno what this means la.. been have told) end up having bow legs?

raylis, i heard about the bowlegged thing also. i googled & read that babies do need to exercise & all the walking practice helps them straighten their legs & strengthens the leg muscles. of course, not too much & need to help support their weight.

'swaddling/bedung' is common among Malays/Indians..in confinement time, they will bedung the baby, as tight as wrapping..kalah  balut mayat! and i was really pity of the baby, but they wud say it is the best for them..macam, bedung is good for later body temperature, body posture, bowlegs, lack of cuddling, etc. I think froggy leg is must be 'NO' for them to see at baby...sadeven BW in infancy also be prohibition!because they say it wud effect body posture..like hunchback, or curl body.

Hm.. I guess the baby'g gonna be in hip spica...kaki terkangkang till she recovers. Orthopaedic hantar for CT scan post operative few weeks, but still displaced. Must be something to do with her bony structures.

My daughter was always froggy legged even when swaddled. Must've been her natural posture coz she was breech, and sat like that in the womb. She was like a kangaroo in the womb... face facing the world, thus nice pics for 3D hehe.

Babies will walk when they're ready. However I had encountered 2 kids <6 years needing op coz of bow legged...but they're overweight (seriously, that girl was 45kg at 5 years old).

Like Happi said, some looked bow legged, but will straighten once the muscles are ok. There are criteria, measurements on xray to determine the bow leg.

@Adrin... the last I read was in a some wrap website... can't remember. But this is really simple, kan?

@Elly, wah.. ikat? Definitely didn't swaddle her for long. Seminggu lebih je kot. She was really strong and wriggled out from the swaddle.

@Ito... I thought my samosa baby (bila swaddle kat spital, terus froggy leg, so nmpk like samosa tiga segi) was weird coz tak straighten her legs. But paediatrician said twas actually good :) No one would argue with the paedi kan? I'm so glad that MIL didn't kacau even though I'm staying with her. Could do most things... except she insisted on my pantang food, urut, tungku etc.

wanna share anis picture.

she totally refuse to be swaddling. so i let her unswaddle all the time. when the relatives come, prtend to swaddle but loose at the leg. not thighten the leg staright.

my mom pun give up coz at the end, the wrap/bedung will open by anis. hahahaha.

very strong girl.
