Salam and hi all,
I have been thinking on this for quite some time...
Is it ..gendong or pelekap bayi or what?
Just wondering....anybody from DBP here?
I have bad BM, and not to mention, bad English either (basically I suck at language).
But gendong, no matter how traditional and ancient it sounds, seems more appropriate to me, rather than pelekap bayi LOL!
yep... agree with farrah.
i have been using the word gendong at home eversince the first day so it has become my household word. not introduced to the word RS, BW etc etc because that time belum jumpa farrah at Jusco TE
.
i was first exposed to gendong when my cousin actually got one from Jakarta way back during my first baby. that time it was even more difficult to find any kind of sling or pouch etc etc in Malaysia.
she told that thing is called GENDONG so i have calling it gendong for gazillion years... the original word.
wrap pulak was introduced to me by my Ghanian girlfriend also gazillion years ago (during my first baby). their traditional costume always has a piece of long cloth so when they wrap their baby, forever matching je.. so adorable. wrap word in ghanian tak tau la pulak...
GENDONG ke KENDONG? kene check kamus ni..
Gendong. I don't think lekap etc is understood. Kendong, gendong.. i takde kamus dewan kat rumah ni. But we've been calling it gendong, gendongan etc.... my aunt is in DBP, my uncle is a poet, used to be with DBP- they refer it as gendong too.
My uncle isn't just a poet/linguist, he's also Jawa :) so gendong isn't foreign (word and action)
just checked with DBP online

a friend informed me gendong gave a negative connotation to most people. they just visualise a maid with a long stretch of kain batik! unfortunately after she mentioned it, i realise its true. people do give me weird looks when i say i want to buy a sling and gendong my baby. now when i tell my certain uninformed friends about babywearing, i say "kain dukung, MACAM kain gendong indo tu but upgraded". so now they are more curious about it lah rather than dismiss it totally.
....promoting babywearing but no baby to carry yet.
deejay,
i think u r right.. gendong cam turn off sket bunyinye.. un-cool kot.
kain dukung sounds better for most ppl.
Thx for sharing!
what to do, malaysian general attitude towards indo maid is mostly negative. so even something good from their traditional way have become negative.
btw syaz, hoping to see you at the parenthood exhibition. got some questions about your rs (budget satu but hati nak beli sumer2) so if you see this waddling mak boyot looking very confused, that might be me.
